Home Tour Baldwin Lane in Birmingham Alabama

This house is from The Parade of Homes in Birmingham Alabama. It is a house that I built several years back. It has 4 bedrooms and 3-1/2 baths, of which two bedrooms and 2 baths are on the main level. It is on a corner lot up on a slight hill. There is a small (in height) retaining wall made of stacked stone, and a circular driveway across the front of the property. It has a wonderful presence.

You enter the foyer through the arched iron Castle Entry door. To the one side is the Dining Room and on the opposite side is the staircase that goes upstairs, and the doorway to the lower level. Straight ahead is the Great Room. There are extensive cased openings into the rooms, and there are hardwood floors on the entire first floor, except for tile in the bathrooms and laundry room.

This hallway runs the length of the house. You can see the Corinthian columns that anchor the entrance into the Great Room, as well as all the cased openings.
In the Dining Room you can see the shadow boxes along both the upper and lower walls, which are painted all the same color, so that the detail of the shadow boxes is more subtle.
Looking from the Great Room into the Dining Room you get a good look at the shadow boxes and the Corinthian columns, as well as the cased openings. Also notice the subtle ceiling detail in the Dining Room.
The Great Room has a large Palladian window that fills this room with light. The ceilings are approximately 20 feet tall and there is extensive crown molding, as well as an elegant fireplace which also has Corinthian columns which repeats the large Corinthian columns at the entry ways into this room.
From the kitchen the chef can see into the Eating Area and Great Room, as well as the sitting area off of the kitchen, and out onto the porch. The Eating Area has a vaulted ceiling and notice the Corinthian columns from the Eating Area into the Great Room. Because of all the windows this is a light filled space and I think it has a very cheerful atmosphere.
I am a huge GE appliance fan. Not once did any of my customers ever call and have a problem with their GE appliances. This kitchen has gas range in the center island that also has a pop up ventilation system, a Delta Faucet, granite counter tops and KraftMaid Cabinetry.

Here you can see the cozy sitting room off of the Kitchen. This room has a cathedral ceiling and lots of windows and a ceiling fan. You also enter the screen-in porch from this room.

Here is the 2nd bedroom on the main level, it was decorated as a sitting room for the Parade of
Homes. It has it's own private bathroom.

The Master Bedroom also has a vaulted ceiling and a ceiling fan. A raised ceiling creates more volume in the room and makes the room feel more expansive. You can see whirlpool tub and decking in the Master Bathroom.

We did a glass mosaic tile band around the back splash on the tub surround. It just sparkles so brightly. Glass mosaics tiles are expensive but if you use them in a limited capacity you still get the glamour without going overboard. We also did a band of the glass mosaics in the shower. Also notice the stained glass window above the tub.

There is a refreshment center in the Master Bathroom that has a refrigerator, as well as upper and lower cabinetry and a granite counter top. I love a refrigerator in the Master Bathroom for both drinks and for facial products that are so much better if they are kept cold. It is also wonderful to get up in the morning and have a fresh bottle of water or an orange juice handy. There are separate closets in this Master Bathroom. You can see into the ladies closet from this view.
This is the ladies sink and vanity within the Master Bathroom. I always like to lower the sit down vanity counter tops to make it more practical. These are KraftMaid Cabinets, granite counter tops and custom  wall hung mirrors.
I am head over heals in love with lighting fixtures and chandeliers in particular. I think a chandelier adds a little glamour to our homes and our lives. I also love natural light in a closet. I believe the owners put in plantation shutters for privacy, but you still get a great deal of natural light.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms and one jack and jill bathroom. I hope you enjoyed seeing this home. I sure did enjoy building it. After the owners moved in we also completed the lower level living space into a foyer with a drop off space, an exercise/play room, a full bathroom, and a large game room which they wanted for watching football and playing pool. This home always felt happy to me, I think it was the result of all the raised ceilings, all the windows letting so much light in, the paint colors and the open flowing spaces. It also has lots of drama from the Corinthian columns and elaborate moldings throughout, but not so much drama that it didn't feel cozy and welcoming.

If you have a home that you would like me to feature I would love for you to contact me. It doesn't  have to be an entire home, perhaps you have one room that you think is wonderful in some way, it could be a porch, a kitchen, a bedroom, or an outdoor kitchen. It could be any space. I would love to hear from you.

Oh, well it made me think of you immediately because of you telling me it was going to go away, however I didn't know it was just going to disappear!

    1. Hey Debbie! Thank you for your very kind words. I had to take my little dog, Priscilla, to the vet for her yearly exam and the whole time I was thinking about your porch and back yard, it is so lively, yet peaceful, it's whimsical! It seems like such a happy place. You are a lucky lady. I added your blog to my blog rolls also.
I love hardwood floors, they are so easy to maintain, and you shouldn't ever have to replace them, I think you will be very happy with them. I need to go spend some more time looking around your blog, it makes me happy.

    1. Hey Jenna, I lived in Birmingham for - well I guess just under 20 years. I lived in Highland Lakes - OTM in Shelby County. I built homes there for 10 of those years - Rumaker Custom Homes. We moved to Dallas Texas 3 years ago, wow, it does not seem like 3 years. I love Birmingham and miss it all the time, it is a very southern hospitality city with some absolutely great people. I was reading on your blog that you also have a home in Orange Beach, which I also miss greatly, for some reason, maybe it is just because it is summer, no that's not it, that I have been a little over the top lately with all things coastal. Who doesn't love the beach?! So glad you found me. I am now following you on bloglovin.
      Thanks, Patty

    1. Thanks Pinky! Who doesn't love great storage space! It is probably one of the most overlooked needs in a house. A friend of mine semi-closed in her attic space and lined the walls with shelves. Great idea!

  22. Wow! I like your house architecture. It looks amazing from outside. I like the brick and the roof .... And I was expected, for some reason, more modern interior. Please, do not take me wrong, but I would introduce more light and space to your interior...
However, it is more of the taste than anything else...
    Nice job!
