DIY Crochet Pillow - No Crochet Skills Necessary

I have been working on making my porch a much more usable and beautiful place. My husband built a headboard bench for the porch which you can read more about here.

I found a quilt for the seat, but I couldn't find any pillows, so I decided to make one of my own. We are painting the bench white and I wanted something a little shabby chic. While walking around High Street Antiques in Plano, Texas I found a crochet tablecloth. It is a large tablecloth and it actually fits my dining room table.

I bought a body pillow for $10.00 at my local Walmart. The pillow is 54" and my bench is 56" so it is going to fit perfectly.

I pulled up one side of the tablecloth onto the pillow, making sure it was tight.

And then I pulled up the other side. On both sides there is a large amount of crochet material left over.

I choose three different yarns that I thought would go well with the other colors I am using on the porch.

I connected the three strands of yarn onto a safety pin which I used to pull the yarns through the holes of the crochet creating a long line of color across the body of the pillow. 

Here is a closeup of the yarn pulled through the length of the crochet material.

On the ends where there is left over crochet material I decided to just tie it together with the same yarn. I cut long strips of the same three yarns and just tied them onto where the pillow itself ends. It gives a nice draping.

The pillow itself needed a bit more embellishment. I went to First Monday Trade Days in Canton Texas and found these. You can go here to see my other finds at Canton. The three in the middle are rosettes with various lace trims and backings added to them. They have safety pins on the back so you can attach them to anything. They were three for $8.00 and the two pieces on the ends which are just pieces of material and lace tied together were $2.00 each.

 I took these and attached them to the center of the pillow.

So here is the completed pillow for my bench.

Did you notice that there was no crocheting or sewing involved? A pair of scissors to cut the yarn and a safety pin to pull the yarn through - that's it. It doesn't get any more simple than this.
