Traditional Home Tour Birmingham Alabama

I built this home a few years back.

Gosh it is more than a few years ago.

Six to be exact.

That’s a long time ago.

It is amazing when looking back on something

and it  just doesn’t seem that long ago

and yet it seems like a lifetime ago.

Funny how our memories work that way isn’t it.

3203 Springhill Exterior
It is a traditional home located in Birmingham, Alabama.

It is about 4,000 square feet

and it has four bedrooms and 3-1/2 baths.3203 Springhill Dining Room
The crown in the Dining Room is a carved molding

that I highlighted with gold gilding.

I literally went around the entire Dining Room

with a very small paint brush and highlighted it all.

I do think it is gorgeous!
3203 Springhill DR Crown Gold Gilding I also applied a golden faux finish on the walls.

The whole room has a glow to it.

I choose a gold chandelier with black crystals

which gave the room even more drama.
3203 Springhill DR Walls and Chandelier
Upon entering the house the paneled Study is on your right.

The entire room is wrapped in stained paneling

It is an impressive room

where you can

hold an important meeting or curl

up and read a good book.

The male population loves these rooms.

I am pretty fond of them myself.
3203 Springhill Library walls As you come through the front door

the room straight ahead is the Great Room.

You can see back into the Foyer

and the Dining Room from here.
3203 Springhill Great Room 1a
The carpenter built

the custom cabinetry

and the mantel.

The mantel has a faux finish

that makes it look like an antique.
3203 Springhill Great Room 2b The ceiling is 20 feet in height

and has a gorgeous crystal chandelier.

I can’t imagine a house without a chandelier, or five.
3203 Springhill GR 3a From the balcony you can

see the staircase

the Eating Area,

and the Kitchen.3203 Springhill GR 4a It is a traditional home but with a

bit of glamour sprinkled throughout.
3203 Springhill GR 5a

I wonder how the owners have decorated these walls.
3203 Springhill Great Room 6b
The Laundry Room has its own door to the outside,

so it is easy to come inside after working in the yard

and clean up right here.

On the opposite wall there is a sink, upper cabinetry

and the washer and dryer.

On this wall we put bead boarding along the wall to protect it

from getting beat up from coats being hung,

we put a cork board above the coat hooks and

and a black board between the upper and lower cabinetry.3203 Springhill Laundry Room I love a dramatic Powder Room

and this one does not disappoint.

The textured walls were painted in a deep burgundy and

a black crystal chandelier hangs above.
3203 Springhill Powder Room Here is a view into the kitchen from the opposite side

of the staircase in the Great Room.

All of the cabinetry is KraftMaid Cabinetry

except for the hood

which was custom built.
3203 Springhill Kitchen 1a The Kitchen and Keeping Room

have a cathedral ceiling

and we installed wood beams

to give it warmth

and a more relaxed vibe

than the more formal rooms.
3203 Springhill Kitchen 2a Here is a view of the detail on the custom hood.

This house was in the Parade of Homes

and we won a Silver Award for the house and a

special award for the design of the hood

and the Kitchen itself.
3203 Springhill Kitchen4a At the opposite end of the Kitchen is the Keeping Room.

It has its own fireplace

and the door goes out to an enclosed porch

and from there the owners can also get to a large open deck.
3203 Springhill Keeping Room From the Great Room you enter the Master Suite.

The first room you enter is the Sitting Room.

It looks out into the deck and the private backyard beyond that.
3203 Springhill Sitting Room The Bedroom itself is just beyond the Sitting Room.

I always put ceiling fans in the Bedrooms.3203 Springhill Master Bedroom From the bed you can out to the back yard.

The back of this house faces east

so the sun will awaken you each morning.

I love it when a bedroom faces east

telling us it is time to rise each morning.
3203 Springhill Sitting Room 1a The door you see there goes into the Master Bathroom.

There are three walls in this bedroom

so there is plenty of room

for dressers and armoires.
3203 Springhill Sitting Room a As you enter the Master Bathroom area

the first area you come to is the

Master Bath Foyer

with a full wall mirror with beveled edges,

a chandelier and crystal sconces right and left.

This is a great place for a vanity.
3203 Springhill Master Foyer There are two custom built closets

with lots of drawers

hanging space and shelves.
3203 Springhill Custom Closets And of course more chandeliers.

All of the doors are solid wood doors with the

moldings applied and then stained.
3203 Springhill Closet Chandy
Here you can see the details of the custom woodwork.

My husband built the closets.
3203 Springhill Closet Details The Master Bath has a whirlpool tub

with a wood stained front,

tiled decking,

and a granite backsplash with bronze inlays.
3203 Springhill Bathroom The Master Bathroom runs the width of the house

and you can see the second closet at this end.

The mirrors were also custom made and notice that

the sconces sit on top of the mirror itself.

In the center of the room is a large linen cabinet

and on each side a sink vanity with drop in sinks and granite tops.
3203 Springhill Bathroom a
Upstairs there are three bedrooms,

one with a private bath and the other two bedrooms share a bath

but have their own private vanity areas.

This home also has a two car garage on the main level and

an additional two car plus garage on the lower level.

Houses in Birmingham are mostly built with a basement

under the entire home,

and a great deal of the homeowners finish off that space

for additional living space.

There are some wonderful people living in this home,

Toile iphone 5 Case – My Market Find of the Week #4/2014

One thing I always have with me is my iphone.

Can you imagine a world anymore without portable phones?

I also happen to love the toile design.

I don't think I have ever seen a bicycle toile before.

It is a unique and unusual twist on the toile design.

Do your designs choices within your home

get reflected in what you carry into the outside world

such as this iphone cover?

An Informal Garden - Pin of the Week #4 / 2014

Don’t you love gardens!

It is winter at the moment and so of course

I am longing for spring time.

There is something so special about this space

with all the wildflowers and

the white picket fence

and those pavers .

It is a small garden and that makes it all the more perfect.

Not too much to care for but rather just enough

to mend and love and enjoy.
Do you have a garden?

Is it a formal garden

or carefree with wildflowers?

If you would like to see more gardens then

China Tea Set and Special Memories

Today is the day my mother was born.
We grew up celebrating this day.
In 2011 she went to Heaven.
She was ready, prepared, willing and wanting.
Teapot1 002b
I don’t remember her ever not having these china teapots.
I think they were her mothers.
They have been with me my whole life.
Teapot1 005b
They are very delicate and I am always so careful with them.
Teapot1 020b
Their delicateness makes me think of how fragile life can be
and how we should never take a day for granted.
Teapot1 029b
She gave them to me.
She wanted me to have them.
I often wonder why me, why not one of her other daughters.
I don’t know this answer but I am grateful that I have them.
Teapot1 034a
Memories can be fine and delicate
and sometimes the best memories
are created during the most simplest of occasions and
we have no idea how those moments
can be that memory that stays with us for a lifetime
and establish just who we are to ourselves and to each other.
I celebrate the birth of my mother.

Appliance Finish Trends - Is Stainless Steel Out

Stainless steel finishes in appliances has been trending for a long time now.

If I had built a house without it in the over $300, 000 range

then I would not of been able to sell that house.

Do you think it is on its way out?

Are you still loving it and wouldn’t even consider anything else,

or are you wanting a different finish?

Have you seen Whirlpools White Ice finish?

Do you think it would look fabulous with white cabinetry?

Or what about GE’s Slate Finish?

It still has a stainless steel appearance

but it feels like it is tapered down and not so bright.

White cabinetry is very trendy right now.

What appliance finish do you think works best with white cabinetry?

What about a white finish?

White cabinetry and white appliances.

I am loving this myself.
White Appliances

And what about cabinetry on the face of your appliances?

I believe this is still playing a major role in kitchens.

Cabinetry fronts in French Country designed kitchens will probably always be in style.

If you are living in your home and

you have no intention of selling anytime soon

then you can get exactly what you want.

if you are planning on selling in a few years and are concerned about resale

then what finish would you put in your house?

Personally I am betting that stainless steel finishes will be around for a long time.

What is the finish on your appliances?

If you are going to buy new appliances what finish will you be choosing?

My Shabby Chic Porch is being featured at Southern Guide To Life

I was delighted when the editor Shannon from Southern Guide To Life contacted me

to let me know she had chosen my Shabby Chic Porch to be featured on her website.
Shabby Chic Porch
My Shabby Chic Porch was part of a 6 week One Room Challenge with Linda from Calling It Home.

The challenge was to transform a space in a six week time frame.

You can see Week One to see how it all began, and what I started with,

which wasn’t much.
Porch before picture
And then Week Two where I gathered some inspiration for my porch.
Porch Week Two Inspiration
Week Three I share with you how a  discarded wicker chair went from trash to treasure.
Wicker Chair Redo
Week Four I show you how I transformed a headboard into a bench, and so can you.
Heardboard refurbished as a bench
And on Week Five so many things came together and with a little paint these chairs went from drab to fab!

My husband also made a coffee table and we painted it turquoise.
Chairs changing from drab to fab
And then for the final reveal

we have Week Six where it all came together. Porch Final Reveal
Please go over to the Southern Guide To Life and show her some love for featuring my Shabby Chic Porch.

She also has a great website where you will want to spend some time and look around.

If you have any questions about the porch transformation I would be happy to answer them.

Glass Decanter - My Market Find of the Week #3/2014

No more fruit flies.

I love glass decanters and I love using them

but in certain seasons those little bugs can be a nuisance.

Well not anymore

at least not in the decanter itself.
This would also be great to keep beside your bed at night

with a crystal glass beside it.

You can get this glass decanter with the wood ball top at

Do you have a preference to your containers?

Do you use decanters or pitchers

or do you simply use the container it came in?

Inspirational Words and Books

It’s a sign.
Do you believe in signs?
I came across this book last night while
attempting to organize my books.
bloom 002aLess than a week ago I had chosen my word to inspire me for this new year,
which if you missed you can read here. My Word Of The Year was – Bloom.
I had forgotten I even had this book but I was very pleased to see it.
For I consider it is a sign that I am on the right road.
bloom 004a
How could I be on the wrong road?
Everyone, all the time should be blooming.
bloom 005a
It was so very nice to stumble upon a reminder to embrace life
and the journey of life.
bloom 006a
Reminders are good and so are positive words and positive thinking.
Negativity will get you nowhere.
bloom 007a
Sometimes a little push in the right direction is all that is needed.
Other times a big and uncomfortable push might be required.
But for this moment this book was a blessing to come across.
bloom 010a
Do you have inspirational books in your home?
I used to have them all over the place
and I think I need to get them back out and within easy reach.
If you are interested in this book you can get it at Amazon.com
