Appliance Finish Trends - Is Stainless Steel Out

Stainless steel finishes in appliances has been trending for a long time now.

If I had built a house without it in the over $300, 000 range

then I would not of been able to sell that house.

Do you think it is on its way out?

Are you still loving it and wouldn’t even consider anything else,

or are you wanting a different finish?

Have you seen Whirlpools White Ice finish?

Do you think it would look fabulous with white cabinetry?

Or what about GE’s Slate Finish?

It still has a stainless steel appearance

but it feels like it is tapered down and not so bright.

White cabinetry is very trendy right now.

What appliance finish do you think works best with white cabinetry?

What about a white finish?

White cabinetry and white appliances.

I am loving this myself.

And what about cabinetry on the face of your appliances?

I believe this is still playing a major role in kitchens.

Cabinetry fronts in French Country designed kitchens will probably always be in style.

If you are living in your home and

you have no intention of selling anytime soon

then you can get exactly what you want.

if you are planning on selling in a few years and are concerned about resale

then what finish would you put in your house?

Personally I am betting that stainless steel finishes will be around for a long time.

What is the finish on your appliances?

If you are going to buy new appliances what finish will you be choosing?

  1. I think stainless is here to stay. I was hoping it would change.

    1. Dee, I think a lot of people would like to see it change up - if not just for something different.

  2. I like the slate! It might be a little easier to care for too.

    1. Julia, I was thinking the same thing, especially finger prints!

  3. I wouldn't trade stainless at this point. Love the clean look at sparkle it adds to the kitchen. The ice white you mentioned is intriguing - haven't seen it in person.

    1. Stacey, I think the reason that stainless has trended for so long is that it is a great finish. Yes, there are complaints about finger prints and dings, but the stainless appearance works in any kitchen with any cabinetry finish.

  4. I personally love stainless steel appliances yet I have none! LOL! That's just because we haven't needed to replace any of our major appliances yet. Our dishwasher was replaced, but we kept it white to match our existing appliances. I have white cabinets, so white appliances go fine with that, especially in a small kitchen cooking area. It keeps the eye moving across the room rather than stopping and starting with a different finish. My eating area is fairly large though. So, I feel like I have a decent size kitchen overall. The white helps it feel even bigger. I love the look of a commercial stainless steel range and then let everything else be white. That way it becomes a focal point to the kitchen. Maybe in our next house, I'll get it. We don't plan to retire in this house so there will be another one in our future that we hope to be able to have more of what we want.

    1. I love....a white on white finish. You are so right, having the same color be consistent doesn't break the eye and makes everything look larger and cleaner. I personally happen to like stainless but I don't think it is the only option - however if I were building a house, "I" would put in stainless steel because I "believe" that is what people are expecting. Now if I had a nice little cottage in a historical neighborhood I could put in stainless, but I could also safely put in white appliances. I also like a commercial stainless steel range - I don't think those are going anywhere anytime soon. But in how many years will our kitchen be outdated because we have stainless finishes in them? When will that happen?

  5. I still love clean stainless steel unless it's one of those gorgeous French ovens!! Great post!

  6. Hope stainless stays in till my black one dies!

    1. Haha! I can only assume you are saying this because you want a stainless steel frig!

  7. Yikes!

    I loved every single photo.
    What an informative post.

    I am a new follower-
    Enjoyed visiting,

    1. Thank you and thanks for following! Love making connections with new people. Welcome!

  8. I do not like stainless steel appliances because I have a phobia in touching stainless steel. I get shocked.

    1. Haha! I haven't heard that before, but way too often when I am in a store - the grocery cart shocks me over and over again - not all the time just on some days. I hate that.

  9. I've never been a big fan of stainless and have always preferred white. However; all of our appliances will need to be replaced in the next few years and I am in a quandary as to what I should do as we will probably be downsizing and selling our home in the next 5 years. I know most young families will be looking for stainless. By the way, I love the vintage kitchen above with the turquoise inside the cabinets and the white vintage look appliances.

    1. If I had to buy appliances right now for a house I was selling I would buy stainless but if you have a few years then perhaps there will be a new leader in the finishes of appliances by the time you need to make your purchases. You are lucky you get to wait. The white kitchen above you are referencing is absolutely gorgeous, and proving that stainless isn't the only game in town.

  10. I have never been a stainless fan, nor a granite fan for that matter. I'm always looking for new trends in appliance finishes but we seem to be stuck on stainless. Thankfully there are many stylish countertop options and granite seems to be fading. I love the White Ice. Wish they made it in bisque.

  11. I'm so glad to see stainless steel on the way out! All the women I know who have stainless steel appliances have kitchens full of ugly fingerprints and smudges. There is even a lady who is making an entire career out of helping women who have stainless steel sinks overcome their depression about the constant smudges and water spots - it makes women feel that no matter how hard they work to keep their homes clean, that stainless steel will always look nasty, and they feel that it's a total waste of time to clean anything when their kitchens are going to look dirty no matter what, so they give up trying.

  12. As a professional house cleaner, I hate stainless. I spend so much time polishing. I am ready to update my own kitchen, white appliances, and have been waiting to see what might replace the stainless fad... It's not looking good. I don't want all white cabinets either, high maintenance!

  13. Don't let anybody tell you that hiring a professional appliance repair company has to be expensive - this is not always true. lake forest appliance repair
